THE WAIKOLOA FOUNDATION DRIVES AWAY HUNGER WITH FOOD COLLECTION FOR THE FOOD BASKET

Community members able to donate can help feed hungry Hawaiʻi Island residents
through December 23

WAIKOLOA, HAWAIʻI ISLAND – In support of The Food Basket, Hawaiʻi Island’s Food Bank, The Waikoloa Foundation has organized a resort-wide food drive to benefit food insecure families throughout Hawaiʻi Island. With the food collection coming to a close after December 23, The Waikoloa Foundation is urging community members to participate in ensuring that local families have meals on the table this holiday season.

“The pandemic has only heightened food insecurity on Hawaiʻi Island and the challenges local families face every day,” said Kristin Frost Albrecht, Executive Director, The Food Basket. “We’re grateful for The Waikoloa Foundation’s generosity, support and keen understanding of what our community needs to survive and thrive.”

The Food Basket helps between 40,000 and 50,000 families a month – a sharp increase brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now serving half of Hawaiʻi Island’s population, The Food Basket continues to work alongside community partners and advance their supplemental food programs, traditional food pantries and congregate meal sites to assist kamaʻāina.

“The Food Basket’s work is so critical to ensuring the health and wellbeing of families throughout Hawaiʻi Island,” said Cary Boeddeker, Board Chair, The Waikoloa Foundation. “Serving our community is at the very heart of what we do at The Foundation, and we’re deeply honored to support their organization and the thousands of families in need throughout our community.”

Community members can donate non-perishable food at the following locations throughout Waikoloa:

  • The food court at the Queens’ Marketplace
  • A-Bay’s at the Kings’ Shops
  • The golf shop at the Kings’ Course Clubhouse

The Waikoloa Foundation’s food drive ran from Black Friday through December 23. Upon completion, The Waikoloa Foundation has committed to making a matching monetary donation to The Food Basket for every pound collected during the food drive.
